Plucked from a 60's Garage - The Sufis

Nashville's psych band The Sufis sound like something plucked right from Rhino Records Nuggets series and dropped into the 21st Century. Led by multi-instrumentist Clavin Laporte, The Sufis use vintage production techniques, such as tape manipulation and reverbed vocals, and instrumentation culled from homemade, refurbished equipment to create a groovy 60's vibe reminiscent of 'Shadows Of Knight', 'The Seeds', and 'Beau Brummels'. Their new album is available at Ample Play Records.

Stream: Fistful of Beard - Until We Know Better

Huntsville, Alabama’s three piece Fistful of Beard announced on Monday the release of their NEW Album 'Until We Know Better' will be out Oct. 5th recorded with Andy Jackson of Hot Rod Circuit. I first came across these guys at Couch by Couchwest 2011, I thought there was a video around but I can't find it. After a band member shuffle right after their first EP the members are Matt Spencer - Guitar/Vox Joey Hardy -Drums David Flowers-Bass/Vox and it seems they are firing on all three cylinders

Bare bones alt-country punk rock? Yeah that fits.  Dirty geetars, bigfoot drum beats, anthemic rhythms and vocals with attitude. There is no pretense with these guys, they wear their hearts on their sleeves and pour their souls into the music, maybe not because they want to, but they have too?
It seems cathartic for them and in turn for us who listen also.
The album kicks off with the danceable rocker 'Bedroom Dance', two other stand-outs are the haunting heartfelt ballad 'Leavin' and 'White Bluff' with it's poignant storytelling. The Punkish Cowboyesque 'In The Casket' captures the guy's at their loosest jammyist best.
Lyrically all nine songs recount the tribulations of life's experiences and how they were dealt with from what was known and what was not yet learned, the type of stuff that is familiar to us all. After listening one feels vested in the story's and members of the band, to convey feelings like that is an accomplishment in it's self.  An excellent album guys.
Shit fucks up and you have to deal with it. We write songs that we have lived. I know it's a cliche, but we are a "three chords and the truth" band. We write about what we know and have experienced. - David Flowers
Available for purchase tonight Oct. 4th at midnight on Bandcamp

The Aquarian Weekly Presents Vol. 2 Free Comp

The Aquarian Weekly, New Jersey's best souce for music in the Tri-State since 1969 Presents Volume 2 Free Compilation.....

A desert blooms in Brooklyn - Golden Animals

A desert blooms in Brooklyn, Golden Animals are Tommy Eisner - Vocals / Guitar and Linda Beecroft - Drums / Backing Vocals who met on a sidewalk in Brooklyn, recorded the ‘Do the Roar! EP released Aug, 2007 an alt-country/folk psychedelic flavored with a tinge of burlesque 4 song EP, and then headed west to the desert to house-sit for Gordon Kennedy, author of ‘Children of the Sun’. Returning from the desert, Tommy’s vocals sound like he ingested peyote and Jim Morrison’s soul. In May 2008 they released the album ‘Free Your Mind and Win a Pony’ an eleven song excursion into a 60’s time warp, produced by Chris Coady (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, TV on the Radio, Blonde Redhead).
They now have a new album 'Hear Eye Go' due out Oct 30th and will be available for download / vinyl pre-sale. The first single ‘All Your Life’ available as a digital download for a buck. Definitely looking forward to this release and will certainly order it on vinyl.

Listen to two new tracks - Most My Time and The Letter

‘All Your Life’ Video

I saw them preform at The Bowery Electric at The Dead Exs  Resurrection CD release party and was mesmerized by the groovyness and shear abundance of music from just the two of them. I haven't been transported to those places in my mind like that in a long time. This band has captured a sound that for to long was relegated to obscure underground radio.

The Steady Roller from ‘Free Your Mind and Win a Pony’ also included on the Bang Bang Boogaloo NYC Rock n Roll Comp which as lots of other goodies, if you haven't gotten it yet, well get it

September - Feel Bad For You

Here's your monthly Feel Bad For You mix from the eclectic group of blogoshere muso's you've come to know and love. Get it.

 1. Title: Young Blood Artist: Black Pistol Fire Album: Big Beat ’59 (2012) Submitted By: @mikeorren Comments: Saw these guys open for The Scabs in Austin a couple months back and thought they were great. Songmanship takes a jump in their new album– first time I heard this, I swore it was an old favorite.

2. Title: Everybody’s Devil Artist: Some Dark Holler Album: Hollow Chest (2012) Submitted by: Corey Flegel – This Is American Music

3. Title: One Time Thing Artist: Michael Chapman Album: Rainmaker (1969) Submitted By: Truersound Comments: Had the joy of meeting the man and seeing him perform at a private party recently. He sat on the porch with an amped acoustic, no vocals….and proceeded to blow us all away.

4. Title: Miénteme Artist: The Moonstones Album: Fuzz, Farfisa y Fiesta (2011) Submitted By: BoogieStudio22 Comments: These guys started following me on twitter. I found their Bandcamp site (http://themoonstones.bandcamp.com/) and was floored by their retro 60s sound. Instant fan! About half the songs are in Spanish, the other half in English. I finally found a label in Australia where I could buy their CD (and got a couple of samplers too).

5. Title: Wanted Artist: Town Hall Brawl Album: demos (2010) Submitted By: hoosier buddy Comments: “I remember when called me up, asked me out to the laundromat, playin’ pool on the dry cycle, can’t have more fun than that. Never told anyone your secret, even though I know you told mine. I could never do that to another; some things should always be protected.”

6. Title: There’s More Pretty Girls Than One Artist: Ricky Skaggs & Tony Rice Album: Skaggs & Rice (1980) Submitted By: @philnorman Comments: Been doing more duo gigs lately, and there’s not many better bluegrass duo records to study than this one. Also, girls are pretty.

7. Title: Like A Drug Artist: Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside Album: Dirty Radio (Deluxe Version) (2012) Submitted By: Bryan Childs (Autopsy IV) Comments: Ding a ding dang my ding a long ling long. Also Submitted By: @popa2unes Comments: I’m Hooked

8. Title: Define A Transparent Dream Artist: Olivia Tremor Control Album: Music From The Unrealized Film Script Dusk At Cubist Castle (1996) Submitted By: Ryan (Verbow at Altcountrytab.ca) Comments: RIP Bill Doss.

9. Title: Missing You Artist: Chris Knight Album: Little Victories (2012) Submitted By: Simon Comments: Not made a bad album Mr Knight and his new one is no exception, best of the plugged in releases so far for me.

10. Title: Coax Me Artist: Sloan Album: Twice Removed (deluxe reissue) (1994) Submitted By: @scratchedsoul I loved Sloan when they first came out, but then I hated this record when it was originally released in 1994. It’s absolutely grown on me over the years. I always loved the line ‘I think Consolidated’s OK, It’s not the band I hate, it’s their fans.’ That line definitely applied to Consolidated at the time and has applied to many bands since.

11. Title: For A Time Artist: Guster The Face Buster (G.F.B) Album (year): G.F.B (2011) Submitted By: annieTUFF Comments: Well, is it that time again? September? Already? The start of fall is upon us? We could still go to the lake right now and take a dip during the middle of the hot day, but by the end of the month I bet we’ll be wearing sweaters and eating only foods made with pumpkin. Is the pumpkin thing just me? Maybe… Anyway. Back to music. Part of fall is feeling a little bummed, summer is ending, stuff is dying, its starting to get darker in the morning, but you’ve got to embrace those feelings…and then punch them in the face. So, this month I’m embracing the bummer. Next month I’ll continue my fall tradition with the punching my bummer in the face. For now, I’ll introduce you to my brother…Guster The Face Buster.

12. Title: Bible on the Dash (featuring Hayes Carll) Artist: Corb Lund Album: Cabin Fever 2012 Submitted By: Rockstar Aimz Comments: Corb Lund and Hayes Carll (and Todd Snider) are among the few songwriters still following the long tradition of using humor in country music. This song is one of the highlights off of Lund’s new album.

13. Title: New York Artist: Sex Pistols Album: Never Mind The Bollocks (1976) Submitted By: Bowood Comments: this popped up on my iPod, the whole album is just a middle finger to everyone and everything.

14. Title: Best Song Everrr Artist: Wallpaper Album: Ultimix 181 (2011) Submitted By: tincanman Comments: I’m jush wanna say I love you FB…FMB…shit…FBFUCKY peoples. Yesh, I’ve had a few brwskiiiiiiiiiis ha haha, but thatsh not it. No, I shwear, I just love you. all. Video is the NSFW version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr7pEzgW_7Y

15. Title: Storms (Fleetwood Mac cover) Artist: Matt Sweeney & Bonnie “Prince” Billy Album: Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Fleetwood Mac Tribute (2012) Submitted By: TheSecondSingle/Beldo Comments: My love for soft rock is no secret to those on ACT. This earnest, stripped down cover by one of my favorite duos brings out the beauty and songwriting perfection that has made so much of Fleetwood Mac’s material age so well (and shine through the admittedly dated production). Now if Matt and Will would make a follow-up to Superwolf…

16. Title: If Money Talks Artist: Jason and The Scorchers Album: Rockpalast – Hamburg Germany (1985) Submitted By: toomuchcountry Comments: I couldn’t let the recent passing of Scorchers’ drummer Perry Baggs slip by without some sort of trib. Two songs written by Baggs – White Lies and If Money Talks – were also two of the most iconic for the band and were staples in their setlists. R.I.P. Perry.

17. Title: Take The Fall Artist: Elliott Randall Album: Take the Fall (2007) Submitted By: Cowbelle www.morecowbelle.net Comments: New favorite SF Americana artist

18. Title: Calgary (Live at Triple J Studios) Artist: Bon Iver Album: Live at Triple J Studios (2012) Submitted By: Slowcoustic Comments: I know the crowd around here doesn’t always give the time of day to Mr. Vernon but I thought I would be the softie who provided a Bon Iver track to FBFY. I like this version of Calgary as it is one where Bon Vernon uses his actual speaking voice to sing and leaves a lot of the ‘signature’ falsetto-style singing out of the equation. And I live in Calgary…so, there is that.

19. Title: I Am The Cosmos Artist: Chris Bell Album (year): I Am The Cosmos (1992) Submitted By: Trailer Comments: If you don’t like this song, I probably don’t like you (much).

The Dead Exs NEW Album is here!  I have had the honor of listening to every mix, remix and tweak of this new material and believe me, where their debut Resurrection left off this album picks up and runs with it. It rips, it rocks, it shreds, it howls and gets down in your bones and rattles you. Stick it in your ears!

Guest Post by Matthew Warburton of Screaming at the Wall
Fans of "Ressurrection" will not be disappointed with The Dead Exs follow-up album, "Relovolution" If you're concerned about the new release straying from the style that got you interested in them in the first place, just listening to one of the new songs will quickly dispel any doubts you might have. These guys went back to their roots musically, and fortunately it looks like they intend to stay there for a long time.

Get Over: Another fast track that features the gritty vocals and wild guitar skills that have made David Pattillo such a distinctive figure and musician. Wylie Wirth does an excellent job complimenting David's sound and enhancing it several times over.

Get Right Time: A very enjoyable classic-rock sounding piece that's incredibly catchy. There's not much to say about it other than the fact that it's a fun song that's overwhelmingly easy to listen to, but there's plenty of solid action throughout to keep you moving.

Midnight Eyes: One of the slow jams that lets each chord sound out, with gentle drums keeping the beat, and vocals that make you feel the pain and emotion put into it. Even by The Dead Exs standards this is definitely one that raises the bar.

It's impossible to pick a favorite among the new tracks, because they are completely different types of songs when compared to one another in terms of tempo and feeling. However, each one features all the trademark sounds that have cemented The Dead Exs in blues-rock history. This highly anticipated album will deliver on all expectations, and I personally cannot wait to get my hands on it.

Here's the Relovolution single on Bang Bang Boogaloo

The Dead Exs, under the NYC label Bang Bang Boogaloo, proved with their debut album "Resurrection" that they understand the potential of truly gritty blues-rock. It's the kind of music that gets you pumped; these guys do not let up for a single second and the end result is very easy to listen to several times over. David Pattillo knows exactly what notes to hit with his voice and on guitar, while veteran drummer Wylie Wirth provides a flurry of thunderous drumwork that makes each track so memorable. I'll provide the links below so if you haven't heard their sound already, you can do yourself a favor and listen to what you've been missing out on. Any fan of garage blues will find themselves right at home with The Dead Exs, I'll single out a few songs in particular that stand out before I go on talking about their upcoming album, Relovolution.

Standout tracks on the album "Ressurection":
Track 1. More Stuff- There is no better first impression than such an amazing first track, which is arguably one of their most famous songs...and there's no debate as to why. It is a fast paced, no-nonsense song that gives you a very good idea of what you're in for right off the bat. David blasts his way through the track with some addicting riffs and the incredible timing during the verse, singing with words that bounce along with every note. Meanwhile, you have the explosive drumming of Wylie, who goes from calmly keeping a beat one second and blowing out your eardrums the next(and I mean that in the best way possible).
Track 5. Nolita Strut- This garage blues instrumental is the perfect track for the middle of the album; it's an impressive demonstration of their range as musicians. I enjoy instrumental songs that feel like they have a very distinct personality, in the sense that it is such a strong expression of the artists involved that vocals aren't a necessity. It's the kind of song that stands on it's own, and it has a lot of replay value to it.
Track 10. Gone- "Resurrection" features a fair amount of good slow songs, but Gone is by far the most sobering of them all. It maintains the grittiness that makes The Dead Exs so endearing, but it also has a sort of deliberate clarity that makes you understand the feeling song before you really know what it's about. It's an excellent closing song in such a well-rounded album. You can hear whole album in its entirety here:

Twin Berlin - 'There Goes My Virtue'

Artwork by the late great Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh

New England based Rockers Twin Berlin are Matt Lopez - vocals, guitar Sean O'Neil - bass, vocals James Janocha - drums
#Winning Guitar Centers ‘Your Next Record’ contest hooked them up with Travis Barker to record their 2nd EP ‘There Goes My Virtue’ at Red Bull Studio in LA. The result of which is three songs of catchy bare bones, no frills Rock and Rolla with a rebellious attitude like it’s supposed to be. Running at about 7 minutes the EP is over way to soon, though you're surely likely to hit repeat a few times, so shell out the three bucks, and also go get their 2011 EP 'Youth Scenes' free from their bandcamp page or scroll down...
Taking a cue from one of my favorite ‘80’s Massachusetts bands ‘The Fools’ they are known for the occasional performance in underwear.

Bohemian Dance Punk We Are Not A Cult - Bella's Bartok

Sean Klaiber, Jesse Putnam, Chris Kerrigan, Amory Drennan, Mark Schilling, Dr. Tom Cain and Asher Putnam

Recently one of my favorite hard to pigeon hole band's The Lucky Jukebox Brigade posted with excitement about Bella's Bartok getting back together so I checked them out and yes they are back together and have split into two entities, the other being Gallery Gods. and have a new EP 'We Are Not A Cult'
Having three release's in the last three years I don't know where they found the time to split up. Here is an interesting interview from Rock On! Young Musicians Workshop Blog

From their Bio they describe themselves as 'Bohemian Dance Punk' that fits quite nicely, The Talking Heads raised in a Gypsy Caravan. Their sound is multicultural magic.
I really recommend listening to their complete volume of work 'At The Kingmakers Ball' is a free download, the other two release's are Name Your Price.
