Crankshaft and the Gear Grinders -What You Gonna Do?

Contrary to their name this band doesn’t miss a gear on this fast paced head on collision of Rock and Blues suited for long highway journeys with the top down and the petal punched.

Alex "Crankshaft" Larson and The Gear Grinders are a hard band to describe to a friend, the press have had hard time too, in recent reviews they've been compared to an unusual list of acts, including Bob Mold, Johnny Cash, The Black Keys, The Band, G Love and the Special Sauce, early Elvis Presley, Tom Waits, The Heavy, Dick Dale, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Strokes, and even Jon Spencer. In every generation a few bands stumble into new territory while managing to somehow sound familiar at the same time, this is one of those bands.
The minimalistic approach to song arrangements works beautifully, and allows them to "genre borrow and meld individual facets into an equally individual sound." - Christopher West.
Backing that stripped down simple style with a high energy show has made them "One of the best and most interesting roots, rock and blues acts playing around town these days." - Cities 97. Go out and see them live, you wont regret it.

Jesse Brewster -12 Months. 12 Singles. One Album - March of Tracks

San Francisco songwriter Jesse Brewster’s new project March of Tracks, 12 Months. 12 Singles. One Album - March of Tracks is a little different than most of the albums you may get. Jesse Brewster is writing, recording and releasing a single ever month for one year, covering a wide range of generes wrapping up with a full release in early 2014 follow along on soundcloud. Support the Indigogo campaign here.

Jesse Brewster’s sound fuses a Rock/Americana style he describes as “Tom Petty and Lynyrd Skynyrd get into a bar room brawl with Neil Young and John Mayer.” Jesse Brewster’s parents brewed his love for music at an early age. There was always something on the record player, be it Willie Nelson, The Stones or Bob Marley. At the age of 12 he started his first band with his brother Jim on drums and childhood friend Uriah Duffy (Whitesnake, Lyrics Born) on bass. “I can’t remember a time in my life when music wasn’t important to me,” he says. “It’s the greatest medium allowing you to express anger and rebellion, playful sarcasm, tenderness and beauty- it’s everything.” Brewster spent years touring with various bands as a guitarist and backup vocalist until a few years ago when he decided the time was right to break out on his own. “The singer-songwriter world is relatively new for me,” he admits. “While I’ve always loved singing, I was focused on the guitar.” Focused, that is, until he could no longer hold back the urge to create his own music. His creative spark was lit by a major catalyst: charity. He created his debut album, Confessional, as a benefit record to raise funds and create awareness of Polycystic Kidney Disease. One track in particular, “One Reason,” was written in memory of Brewster’s brother Jim who passed away in 1998 from PKD. “I have worked extensively with the PKD Foundation” he says, “since the release of the album, I help organize events and perform in support of the finding treatment and a cure for PKD.

Les Lucky - Frets & Hammers Available 07-02

Les Lucky made his way from his home in the Midwest to the New York City area, New Jersey actually where he became an unusually prolific, in-demand session cat and band leader while honing his unique original material. His solo debut Frets & Hammers is the glorious result of an exceptional talent brought to bear on extraordinary material. Lucky sings all vocal parts, plays guitar, piano, bass, percussion and programs drum tracks on 12 lyrical originals.Release date is set for July 2nd on iTunes, CD Baby or Amazon
Les Lucky was born and raised in the Midwest but has spent most of his adult life in the NYC area. Early on, he cut his teeth on the song-oriented vocal music of rock, folk/rock and R&B, but as his skills on guitar and piano developed, the blues, and later jazz, also became influences.

Within months of moving to the NYC area, Les was producing music for TV and radio as well as doing local band gigs. Within two years, he was the featured performer on over 300 dates a year while writing and recording during the day. Along with stints in Las Vegas, Montreal and New England, he spent 5-8 months a year as a solo performer in Europe for several years. He has had the honor and privilege of performing with and for many legends including Les Paul, Elton John, Harry Belafonte, Levon Helm, and Phyllis Hyman.

This is American music by a man who is ready to see where this new music will take him. His world-worn observations provide insightful, and often personal, glimpses into life's struggles as well as its celebrations. He distills the lessons learned from life's trials and tribulations into songs about modern-day relationships, love lost and life's wonders as well as stories of hard luck, questionable choices and human frailties. Les' vocal style ranges from breathy to hard-edged and beyond, while his instrumental prowess is evident in his flights of fancy on both guitar and piano. His transition from one instrument to another is as natural as it is entertaining.

Anthony Leon - Vocals/Guitar
Daniel Jaramillo - Drums/Vocals
Benito Rose Plaza - Guitar/Mandolin/Keys/Vocals
Freddy Lopez - Harmonica/Vocals
David Badstubner - Bass

Anthony Leon & The Chain are a High Energy Two-Steppin'-Head-Bangin' Alternative Country Band based out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. For three years the band has created a sound so unique it deserves it's own genre. A Hybrid of Bluegrass, Honky Tonk, and Rock & Roll, the band uses great lyrics and great harmonies to tell the stories of a good-boy-gone-bad looking for his way home. An Anthony Leon & The Chain show is a roller coaster ride of groovin' and rockin' country based musical rhythms and transitions that keeps everyone's toes a-tapping and boot-tees a-shaking! Anthony Leon & the Chain can be compared with Johnny Cash, Uncle Tupelo, The Old 97's, and the Louvin Brothers.

Listen four songs from 2011's The Pistol, the Bottle, and Shaded Pastures. Full album available on iTunes and CDBaby

Anthony Leon and the Chain cover Iggy & The Stooges "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and Drivin' & Cryin's "Straight to Hell" at The Mine Shaft Tavern in Madrid NM on Feb 23, 2013.

Too Slim and the Taildraggers - Blue Heart

This is the blues laid down thicker than Mississippi mud after a flood.
Originally from Spokane, Washington, far from the cotton fields, Tim “Too Slim” Langford built a loyal international following on the strength of 11 studio and four live albums. Recently relocated to Nashville, the slashing slide and lead guitarist, ferocious singer and streetwise composer of exceptionally hard hitting lyrics.
Too Slim and the Taildraggers latest release 'Blue Heart' release date June 18th on Underwood Records is nine originals and two covers featuring noted producer Tom Hambridge (drums, background vocals), Bob McNelley (guitar), Tommy MacDonald (bass), Reese Wynans (Hammond B-3 organ) and Jimmy Hall (lead vocal, harmonica).
Tim Langford is joined by bassist E. Scott Esbeck (Stone River Boys, Los Straightjackets) and percussionist Jeff "Shakey" Fowlkes (Robert Bradleys Black Water Surprise, Kid Rock, Uncle Kraker) as the newest members of the trio.

Track List:
1. Wash My Hands
2. Minutes Seem Like Hours
3. Blue Heart
4. Make It Sound Happy
5. Good To See You Smile Again
6. When Whiskey Was My Friend
7. If You Broke My Heart
8. New Years Blues
9. Shape Of Blues To Come
10. Preacher
11. Angels Are Back

BIOGRAPHY
If Tim “Too Slim” Langford only played slide he would slither around most other blues guitarists and put a ferocious bite on their pride. However, as the sole six-string slinger, main songster and lead singer of the power trio Langford founded in 1986 in Seattle, Washington, he is a total force of nature. Leaving musical tracks for others to try and follow with now 17 albums and countless gigs, he remains as untamed and menacing as ever.

Tim "Too Slim" Langford, together with his band the Taildraggers, has created an eclectic style of blues and rock that has become a genre all its own. The eclectic nature of the band allows them to easily crossover and appeal to audiences of various musical tastes. Experiencing a Too Slim and the Taildraggers‘ concert is like taking a journey through the history of American music. Too Slim’s style ranges from down-home blues, funky blues rock, Americana, southern swamp rock, and instrumental guitar styles.

Now based in Nashville, TN since the fall of 2012, the touring band, led by Langford, is backed by the top-shelf rhythm section of Scott Esbeck on bass and vocals and Jeff "Shakey" Fowlkes on drums and vocals.

The previous release, Shiver, was nominated for a 2012 Blues Music Award in the Rock Blues category. The last three releases have charted 20 plus times in the top 10 on the Billboard blues chart. The band has received Hall of Fame and Lifetime Achievement awards by the Washington Blues Society, the Cascade Blues Association, and the Inland Empire Blues Society. Band Leader Tim Langford has also received numerous Best Band, Best Guitarist, Best Album and Readers Poll Awards from all three blues organizations and NW media.

Popakazooza The Lost Mix

Coming upon the fourth anniversary of this blog I reflect on how it got started; from ’08 until ’11 my sons had a radio show on Rutgers University radio 90.3 The Core and I was a faithful listener and would call or submit requests of tri-state and other indie bands that I was liking and knew they would also, sometimes they had them in their library but too many times I had to submit a dozen songs to get one they had on hand.
I started sending them mp3’s, "here play these." Frustrated about how much good music was unknown by too many people I started this blog, hence the name Popa’s Tunes.
Most of the bands/artists I highlight have too small of a fan base, (which make them all the more endearing to me) but they are deserved of a wider audience.  So I urge you to help me on this mission, listen to something new, if you like them share, spread the word, and support them with love and accolades. Who knows one day they may be on the cover of Rolling Stone and you can say, “I knew them when”

It's been a long while since I posted a mix, so in celebration of this pompous occasion here is a Popakazooza mix that never got posted, I'll call it The Lost Mix. Here

Feel Bad For You - June '13 Mix Tape

Welcome Adam Dawson (@BrokenJukeboxUS), of the Broken Jukebox music site, to our merry band of musical pranksters. His site is chock full of reviews and he’s also got some great artist interview podcasts happening over there. Please check out his site.
Thanks to Too Much Country (@toomuchcountry) for this month’s artwork.
Comments and discorse here

1. Title: You’ve Got Your Head On Backwards
Artist: The Sonics
Album (1967): Introducing the Sonics
Submitted By: @popa2unes
Comments: Feel bad for you, You’ve Got Your Head On Backwards
2. Title: Skinny Little Bitch
Artist: Hole
Album [2010]: Nobody’s Daughter
Submitted By: hoosier buddy
Comments: I love how the song gradually speeds up at the end. And the lyric just drips with derision. And it’s easy to dance to!
3. Track: Bad Feeling
Artist: The Beat Up
Album (2005): Black Rays Defence
Submitted By: Mad Mackerel Music Blog
Comments: Originally known as The Beatings, the band then evolved into The Beat Up, and formed part of the UK’s contribution to the first garage rock revival led by the White Stripes and Von Bondies. Unfortunately, they soon disappeared after the release of their debut album, which means the 2005 release Black Rays Defence is now a bit of a lost classic. A shame as Bad Feeling, the record’s stand out single is as ferocious, raw and visceral as anything that was served up then let alone in the past couple of years. It channels the spirit of the Seeds, the Stooges, and punk rock in a breathless, chaotic and wholly satisfying way.
4. Title: Chano Pozo’s Shoes
Artist: Tom Mason
Album (2010): East Nashville 3: More Music From The Other Side
Submitted By: @toomuchcountry
Comments: Cuban-born Chano Pozo was instrumental in defining Latin Jazz. He immigrated to the US, and became the first in a long time of Latin percussionists in Dizzy Gillespie’s band. Despite his talent and influence, Chano Pozo apparently was hot-headed – especially when it came to money. And sure enough, he was murdered at the age of 33 because of an argument over money and debts. His age matched the spinning RPMs of a full-length vinyl LP.
5. Title: I Feel Bad For You
Artist: The High Score
Album (2003): Sexy Losers
Submitted By: @annieTUFF
Comments: How about a song that fits the theme by going so far as to have “Feel Bad For You” in the title? This was a no brainer for me, and the song that pops in my head almost every time I type in the web address for this blog. It’s off an old High Score CD (man, 10 years can go by in a flash). A bonus of this theme is it made me revisit the other songs off the Sexy Losers CD (which are all pretty amazing) and reminisce about going to soooo many High Score shows the year this CD came out. Lots of sweaty nights at the Corner Lounge and Pilot Light, with the smell of stale beer and fresh cigarettes. Fond memories.
6. Title: Better Hope you Die Young
Artist: Hellbound Glory
Album (2012): Damaged Goods
Submitted By: Bryan Childs (ninebullets.net)
Comments: A cautionary tale.
7. Title: Bring Me Backwards
Artist: Ellis Paul
Album (1998): Translucent Soul
Submitted By: @philnorman
Comments: From one of my favorite “wallow in it” records.
8. Title: Broken Objects
Artist: 13ghosts
Album (2011): Liar’s Melody
Submitted by: Corey Flegel (This Is American Music)
Comments: this feels like bad times to me….
9. Title: Capsized
Artist: Richmond Fontaine
Album (2007): Thirteen Cities
Submitted By: Simon
Comments: When I read this month’s theme I instantly thought of Willy Vlautin’s writing and the characters and themes that populate his songs and novels.
10. Title: I Don’t Give A Shit
Artist: The Apes Party
Album (2011): Noises From the Hideout – The Best of the GaragePunk Hideout, Vol. 6
Submitted by: @BoogieStudio22
Comments: Short, sweet and to the point.
11. Title: Idiot Wind
Artist: Bob Dylan
Album (1975): Blood On The Tracks
Submitted by: Adam Dawson (@BrokenJukebox)
Comment: I went with a classic Dylan song here. Feel Bad For You can go so many different directions and I think “Idiot Wind” covers most if not all of them. He feels bad for her because of her faults. He feels bad for himself because she’s leaving. He feels a pang of sadness for her, for just knowing him. The protagonist in the song also wants the listener to feel bad for him and her. I realize I didn’t go out of the box on my first submission, but “Idiot Wind” was the song that immediately came to mind when thinking of the phrase, “Feel Bad For You”
12. Title: Shut Up
Artist: Savages
Album (2013): Silence Yourself
Submitted By: @tincanman2010
Comments: Usually when I try to tell my problems to someone they nod politely and say “there, there.” Hence, when people tell me theirs I try not to patronize them. I just tell them to shut the fuck up.
13. Title: The Last Thing I needed the First thing this Morning
Artist: Willie Nelson
Album (2000?) Pilgrimages (best of 3 disc set from  not sure the original album)
Submitted by: Gorrck
Comments: I know most of you probably have this programmed to play as your morning alarm or whatnot, but you just can’t help but feel bad for the singer.
14. Title: Hooray for Me…
Artist: Bad Religion
Album (1994): Stranger than Fiction
Submitted By: @scratchedsoul
Comments: Hooray for me…and fuck you. Straighforward and simple.
15. Title: Ain’t My Year
Artist: Todd Farrell Jr & the Dirty Birds
Album (2012): Where Fake Cowboys Go To Drink
Submitted By: @TheOtherBrit
Comments: I think of FBFY as more of a “sucks to be you” kind of thing not some deeper meaning. Pretty much this whole album could have applied for the FBFY theme cause it’s got that “life sucks but we’re gonna make the most of it and get drunk anyway” which is what I love about Todd. I picked this song because I always think it’s a Two Cow Garage song when it first starts. But seriously, this whole album rules.
16. Title: Baby Bitch
Artist: Ween
Album  (1994): Chocolate and Cheese
Submitted By: @TheSecondSingle
Comments: I think of Feel Bad For You as basically a sarcastic way of saying “fuck off” and/or laughing at someone else’s misfortune. This song does just that.
17. Title: I Hear You Knockin’
Artist: Lazy Lester
Album (1966): True Blues
Submitted By: @Truersound
Comments: Feel bad for a woman who can’t take a hint
18. Title: Humiliation
Artist: The National
Album (2013): Trouble Will Find Me
Submitted By: Ryan
Comments: Every song by The National has a character that exemplifies FBFY. This one is my favorite from the new album and, obviously, its about someone who is getting shit on by life. With lines like: “If I die this instant/Taken from the distance/They will probably list it down/Among other things round town” um, yeah FBFY.

The Howlin' Brothers - Howl

Ian Craft – fiddle, banjo, vocals
Ben Plasse – upright bass, banjo, vocals
Jared Green – guitar, harmonica, vocals

A while back one of my twitter sock puppets won one of the Couch By Couchwest contests and I received this CD in the mail from Country Fried Rock it has been in heavy play since.
The Howlin' Brothers from Tennessee play Old-time, Blues, and Bluegrass music that's ear to ear grinning, foot stompin' hand clappin' with a soulful boogie style that is contagious and worth spreading.

The Howlin’ Brothers are a three-piece string band that brings heart and passion into every performance. Their upbeat shows are heavy with original and traditional music, featuring the sounds of slide banjo, harmonica and old-time fiddle.

Hurray for the Riff Raff’s album “My Dearest Darkest Neighbor”

Mod Mobilian Records and This Is American Music announce the public release of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s album “My Dearest Darkest Neighbor” on July 1st, 2013.
“These are songs I’ve gathered over the years. I’ve taken them with me wherever I go. For a musician who lives most of her life on the road, the songs you know and love are one of your only consistencies. They carry a feeling of home. These songs have been there for me in a dark hour. They’ve guided me down long roads that stretched through time. They have illuminated me on the human spirit, its unbreakable will, its strength and power.  The songwriters who’ve penned them have inspired me endlessly. I have studied them because I hope to never cease my education on how to write a good tune. I threw on two songs I’ve written that were building blocks for me. These are my attempts at the folk tradition of writing a song where someone else left off. I try to learn from the greats. These are soul songs, let’s sing them together. “  - Alynda lee Segarra
Track Listing
1. Delta Momma Blues (Written by Townes Van Zandt)
2. Fine and Mellow (Words by Billie Holiday, Music by Big Bill Broonzy, arranged by Alynda lee Segarra)

Ghost Pal - God Save MCFK

Alexandre da Silva
Matthew Evans
Oliver Ignatius
Henry Kandel
Carson Moody
UPDATE: Ghost Pal has just released a free single, eight plus minute medley of "Will the Circle Be Unbroken/Time Tough  featuring Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen All-Star Choir

Another excellent band from Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Collective, Brooklyn's Psychedelic Soul-Pop Ghost Pal is a fictional band. But not in a sort of Sgt. Pepper's/exotica "let's put on a play!" sort of way. I mean Ghost Pal literally doesn't exist. Let me put it this way: One night, Oliver Ignatius (previously of excellent combos Hysterics, Dirty Faces and Heat Lightning!) ate some bad frozen olive pizza and had a weird dream. At one point in the dream, between the alien invasion and the frozen shipwreck, he fell upon a teeming mass of what looked like buzzing, golden insects, massed together in percolating swells of movement, their vibrations at constant odds with one another, always threatening to become one and always breaking apart at the last minute. On closer inspection, the insects were just little bits of music, strange, beautiful music falling in and out of itself all over the place. When Oliver woke up, he called all his friends together and told them his dream. "We'll have to build an ark!," opined Josh.
Ghost Pal is a band of merry men who live inside the Mama Coco's studio. They take turns making noises and then record them.

You can summon Ghost Pal tonight at Mama Coco’s Funky Kitchen Seance #22 at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge 89 Varet Street Brooklyn, NY 11206 tonight June 14th with 'The All About', 'No Shoes', Hugh Trimble & The Engines, and Mothers.

Quiet Hounds - Megaphona

Anonymous Indie Rockers Quiet Hounds is one part prolific lyricist and melody writer, one part instrumental savant, one part curator of taste, music and culture and one part effortless precision of all things percussive. These creators need no credit other than the satisfaction that these songs take on lives of their own, sent into the ether to be played with the windows rolled down on warm sunny days.

Quiet Hounds 'Megaphona' was almost self-created, having been written and recorded in only two weeks time in a modest warehouse, with no blueprint or preconceived notions. The result is anthemic nostalgia, standing amused and flourishing in the heat of a humid south, playing out like a letter to a long lost love and pulling at heartstrings with every change. Longing, in style again.
Frenzied frontmen, compelling urgency, leading away from what you know, delivered , devoured, wanting more, and a question, Do they know they are possessed? A unifying vibration, timing intuitive, happiness merging with amazed, yes, this is the new soul music; This is rhythm in the service of a poet, this is lift, this is hope, this is art; Thier music is available for free on their webpage in excange for an addy.

Atlanta, GA, November 17th 2012. Quiet Hounds perform "I Get Up" as part of "An Ode To Lost Souls" at the Goat Farm Arts Center. Directed by Matt Rowles and filmed by the IndieATL crew before a crowd of 800 people packed into a historic late 1800's industrial building while simultaneously webcast through Livestream.com with over 1000 views. The hounds constructed staging, lights, sound and artwork to create a truly captivating experience in honor of the soldiers who died at Andersonville prison in 1864. This is a sneak peak from an upcoming DVD & Blue Ray release of the entire show.
